Fans of Wynwood’s hipster haunt Wood Tavern, get stoked! Soon you’ll be able to pair that IPA with a piece of pizza and a candy bar, should you be so inclined.
Owner Cesar Morales has officially entered into a lease for the muraled, two-story building behind Wood, and he plans to start serving up pizza by the slice, European candy bars and healthy juices — all at affordable prices.

“The pizza place will go with the theme of the neighborhood. Artsy, minimalistic,” says Morales. “The convenience store, I’m picturing it like you see in Europe — really cool little stores. Not like a 7-Eleven, but candy bars that are not Hershey’s, imported, the juices and sodas like they sell at Whole Foods. Not something you can get at Costco or Sam’s.”
In other words, unique offerings for a unique area.
“The idea is New York-style pizza,” Morales says. “I don’t want to charge $20 for a gourmet pizza, that’s not what I’m about. It’s catering to people who go to Wood — very local, affordable. I want to continue along those lines as well.”
In addition to candy bars, juices and other goodies, the convenience store will sell sandwiches.
“Not like a Subway, more like what you see in a cool little European café, Like a baguette with prosciutto and mozzarella cheese or something more along the lines of a gourmet sandwich shop without the gourmet prices,” he adds.
Morales says the pizza joint will probably open within six to eight months, after all the permits go through, but the convenience store will likely pop up within 90 days. While the new joints will be open during the day, their hours will likely overlap Wood’s, at least somewhat. So you can totally do the beer and pizza deal on Wood’s epic back patio.
“The neighborhood needs more foot traffic, more food options,” Morales says. “I think it’ll do well. The neighborhood is definitely growing.”
