Tim Tebow isn’t the only football star stepping into the gridiron of abortion rights. New Orleans Saints linebacker Scott Fujita told the New York Times he doesn’t exactly agree with Tim Tebow’s pro-life message, his support of Focus on the Family, or with CBS’s decision to ban a gay dating ad during the Super Bowl.
“The idea of focusing on the family — who wouldn’t agree with that?” Fujita told The Times. “But the means of doing so, he and I might not see eye-to-eye all the way.”
Like Tebow, whose mother was advised to get an abortion for health reasons, Fujita’s biological mother chose to give birth even though she didn’t have the resources to raise her son. Fujita was adopted by a Japanese-American father and white mother.
“I’m just so thankful she had the courage and the support system to be able to carry out the pregnancy. I wouldn’t expect that of everybody.”
Fujita, a supporter of GLBT rights, also supported the gay dating ad that CBS rejected for Super Bowl airtime but understood why it was possibly controversial.
“Do they have the right? Absolutely. Is it going to offend some people? Absolutely.”
Fujita attended the University of California, Berkley, a campus known for its liberal views, and received a bachelor’s degree in political science.
“It’s just me standing up for equal rights. It’s not that courageous to have an opinion if you think it’s the right thing and you believe it wholeheartedly.”
