Keep Miami New Times Free
We’re $1,500 away from our spring campaign goal!
We’re aiming to raise $10,000 by April 26. Your support ensures New Times can continue watching out for you and our community. No paywall. Always accessible. Daily online and weekly in print.
Now that Art Basel is a mere three weeks away, we should all link up in a human centipede chain and get protective of our local art scene. We’re all for the hoity-toity art fair and the strange spin-off events, which follow it around like a piece of TP stuck on a Swede’s shoe. (Alexander McQueen-designed rugs anyone? Hello Kitty pop-up shop? Why not.) But what about the freaking year-round art scene that grows here even in the sweat lodge of August?
For the second year, local arts advocate and facilitator Miami’s Independent Thinkers is making sure there’s a place for homegrown talent during Art Basel — that human chain may not be necessary after all. With the help of 305 Creative Group, Red Fish Media, and K17, they’re hosting a satellite fair at Casa Wynwood, a gigantic warehouse at NW 1st Court and 21st Street. And it’s locals only.
All South Florida artists over age 18 are eligible and artwork of any
kind – animations, music videos, illustration, performance art, etc. – are
welcomed. Artists have until November 25 to submit online, and the
selections will be announce on November 28th. There’s a $20 entry fee
for up to four images and $5 for each additional image, so budget accordingly.
The fair will run from December 2 to 5 at Casa Wynwood (2135 NW 1st Ct.
Miami) and will include live music, DJs, performance art, fashion, and
vittles by Chef Jeremiah of gastropod. Admission cost $10 for students,
$15 general admission. Visit miamithinkerscom.
