Ah, the first day of Summer. But as the mercury rises, our finances continue to dip. Here’s a rundown of free things to do this week.
Monday: Don’t wait for a plague of locusts. See the end-of-days exhibit “20(12)” at a pop-up midtown venue called Miami Art Space. Local painter Kiki Valdes curated art by the likes of Freegums and George Sanchez-Calderon that speaks to the anxiety-filled anticipation of the year 2012.
Tuesday: If your idea of a good time is playing battleship while knitting and listening to new wave, head to Sweat Records’ weekly Rec Room for board games, crafts, and rock’n’roll. There’s no cover for this low-key hang.
Wednesday: Escape the heat as well as midweek boredom with a free screening of Where the Wild Things Are at the Muvico in Hialeah. Dave Eggars wrote it, Spike Jonze filmed it, and Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs scored it.
Thursday: You may not have made it to NYC’s MoMA in time to have
a high-brow staring contest with Marina Ambrovaic, but you can catch
some of her art the Bass Museum’s “Human Rites” exhibit, opening
Thursday night. It’s free for members, so go ahead and sign up. We recently voted Bass the best art museum.
Friday: See Mexican folk art infused with gangster graffiti in
the “Amor Y Muerte” exhibit at Kill Your Idol (home of Miami’s Best Jukebox). Catch the low-riders and skulls of artist Taylor “The
Metsican” Kienholz while DJ Keen One spins an infectious two-step, bossa nova beat.
