Keep Miami New Times Free
We’re $1,000 away from our spring campaign goal!
We’re aiming to raise $10,000 by April 26. Your support ensures New Times can continue watching out for you and our community. No paywall. Always accessible. Daily online and weekly in print.
If your bookshelf is vibrating, it’s because we’re hurtling toward high literary season with Miami Book Fair International just three months away. We’ve been building up our endurance at Miami Squares poetry nights and Hialeah Haikus readings, and we’re hitting up every open-mike night in town. Next up is Writers Read at the Bookstore in the Grove. This week, the theme is imagination, so bring works of any genre that explore how our world might change if we stopped being so goddamn literal.
Event organizer Michael R. Malone recently found his own poetic mind as he transitioned from journalism to fiction. He began his career at the Miami Herald in the ’80s and even covered the Manuel Noriega trial before teaching creative writing at Florida International University. Now armed with an MFA, Malone runs the themed Writers Read nights as well as writers’ workshops through Write to the Edge. The mike goes live at 7:30 p.m., and all pieces must be shorter than seven minutes. There’s no cover to read or listen.
