It might not have been the smartest move to open a little French bistro directly across the street from Le Bouchon du Grove, but Le Cafe Pop and its bright orange awnings seemed to be making a go of things for a while, mostly enjoying a brisk lunch and brunch crowd.

Just this weekend, diners enjoyed al fresco omelets and waffles under oversized umbrellas as people jogged by or walked their dogs – just another beautiful Saturday morning in the Grove.

This past evening, however, the scene was quite different. The restaurant was closed, the outdoor tables gone, and even the name was taken off the orange awning, as if Le Cafe Pop was never there. Though the website is still up, the telephone has been disconnected.

Coconut Grove was hit hard by the recession, with a number of restaurants and the movie theater closing. But this past year, the Grove has seen a resurgence with the multiplex reopening and the debut of new restaurants and lounges like Spartico, Central Beer Garden and Sushi Lounge, Peacock Garden Cafe and Lulu. Let’s hope Le Cafe Pop was a “one-off” and not a harbinger of things to come.
