Although she growled, “I don’t give a damn about my bad reputation,” Joan Jett’s rock prestige is actually pretty stellar. She joined the Runaways at age 15, befriended and recorded with the Sex Pistols, and produced the Germs. She was a pioneer in femme guitar tricks and was eventually honored as one of only two women on Rolling Stone’s “Greatest 100 Guitarists of All Time” list. And as Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, she released a steady flow of chart-toppers, including “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll,” “Crimson and Clover,” and “I Hate Myself for Loving You.”
And while most ’80s rock stars have shriveled up from too many drugs or puffed up in the suburbs, Jett is as chiseled and growl-y as she was during her peak. She released her last album, Sinner, in 2006, and it reflects a more politically conscious Jett with tracks such as “Change the World” and “Turn It Around.” See Joan Jett and the Blackhearts this Tuesday at Hard Rock.
