Vogue readers think they know it all about imported fashion. They know Italian designers like Armani and Versace have become American style standards; French houses such as Dior and Chanel are the backbone of the industry; and Brit rebels Vivienne Westwood and Stella McCartney have been making waves across the pond for decades. But what about fashion from the Caribbean? Islands such as Trinidad, Jamaica, and Barbados boast topnotch designers too. And now fashionistas can see the islands’ freshest styles at the Haiti Art and Fashion Showcase. “Haitian style is very colorful and bright. Each line has its own unique look,” explains event organizer Kathleen Barreau. The coolest threads from Kompas Jeans, The Maroons, Underscore, and Labissiere Dezign will be featured. Paintings, spoken-word poetry performances, and live music will add to the artistic vibe. Kick off Haitian Cultural Month in style today.
