Art Basel Miami Beach is upon us, ushering in waves of foreign creatives to take over the local art scene. As residents of the 305, however, we know this city’s culture goes way beyond Miami Art Week, which is why each year, New Times awards the city’s best creatives with MasterMind grants.
New Times‘ MasterMind Awards seek to give back to Miami’s cultural community in the form of citywide recognition and some sweet, sweet cash. Last year, New Times editors and experts from the cultural community selected performance artists TM Sisters, experimental dance company Bistoury Theatre, and artist Randy Burman to receive the honors. Previous winners have included filmmaker Julian Yuri Rodriguez, visual artist Kevin Arrow, and musician Otto Von Schirach.
This year, we’re continuing the search for the best artists, musicians, filmmakers, and other culture producers in the Magic City. As in past years, MasterMind grants of $1,000 will be given to each of three winners at Artopia, New Times‘ annual arts soiree, taking place February 18, 2016, at the Coral Gables Museum. Ten award finalists (including the winners) will be featured in a special issue of New Times. And, in an added twist, MasterMind finalists will also receive exhibition space at Artopia, putting their work right out in front of the local community.
To be considered, send the following to masterminds@miaminewtimes.com before January 17, 2016: your name, phone number, email address, and home address, accompanied by a short bio, a description of your work, links or emailed images of your work, and a description of your vision for your showcase at Artopia if you become a finalist.
