A cold front has hit Kendall, but this time, rainbow sprinkles, Nutella, and a cloud of liquid nitrogen are involved. Chill-N Nitrogen Ice Cream has just opened its first-ever Kendall location at Kendall Place (9065 SW 107th Ave.), bringing flash-frozen, made-to-order scoops to the area.

For those unfamiliar with the delicious scoop shop, the fan-favorite ice cream spot has carved out a loyal following across South Florida. What's even cooler is that this new shop is a homecoming for 26-year-old franchisee Max Clivio. After leaving behind a career in finance, Clivio has returned to Miami to bring Chill-N to his hometown of Kendall. Now, his Kendall scoop shop is part of a three-store expansion into Cutler Bay and Homestead.

Miami's Very Own Scoop Shop Chain

Founded over a decade ago in Pinecrest by Chuck Woodward (a University of Miami student at the time) and his partner Daniel Golick, the ice cream shop has become a beloved Miami staple.

Back in 2012, they began making ice cream in a garage at a house where they lived near the Biltmore in Coral Gables. "I didn't even know ice cream had eggs till we started making it, but family friends told me about a similar concept in Orlando, and I knew it would work here, so we went with it," said Woodwaard to New Times back in 2014. According to Woodward, he and Golick would look up Emeril Lagasse's ice-cream recipes and watch him make treats on television in order to learn. "We went through a lot of testing and probably ate lots of ice cream that we shouldn't have, but it couldn't have been that bad if we're still here. And it led us to opening the store," Woodward says.

Woodward and Golick had no previous restaurant experience, and allegedly, the first day Chill-N opened in Pinecrest was the first time Woodward had touched a cash register. But the rest is sweet history.

Winner of New Times' Best Ice Cream in Miami 2023

Why the hype? Every order at Chill-N has been built from scratch. Guests choose their base (cream, yogurt, or non-dairy options like coconut or oat milk), then layer on flavor (from classics like vanilla to more adventurous options like biscotti or salted caramel), and finish with unlimited "Mix-N's." Think cookie dough, M&Ms, fresh berries, and rainbow sprinkles. Then comes the showstopper: a quick blast of liquid nitrogen that flash-freezes the concoction into velvety scoops right before your eyes.

It's dessert meets science experiment, and it's earned the brand plenty of fans, including a nod as Best Ice Cream in the 2023 edition of Best of Miami by New Times.

There are currently over a dozen locations across South Florida, including Aventura, South Miami, Coconut Grove, Pinecrest, and Coral Springs, as well as in Lake Nona and Winter Park, Orlando.
