One of Charleston's most famous Southern barbecue spots with long lines out the door is opening its first location in the Sunshine State this year.

Award-winning pitmaster Rodney Scott is expanding Rodney Scott's Whole Hog BBQ to the Magic City, marking his first outpost in Florida. The celebrated barbecue spot will be located at 7100 N. Miami Ave. in the up-and-coming Little River neighborhood. Little River's ever-growing culinary landscape caught the eye of James Beard Award-winning pitmaster Scott, who began his journey in barbecue at just 11 years old in his family's South Carolina restaurant.

"I've cooked whole hog barbecue in a lot of places, but bringing it to Miami, and specifically Little River, is something special," says Scott. "I'm thrilled to share the flavors and traditions of whole hog barbecue with a community that values great food and meaningful connections."

Rodney Scott's Whole Hog BBQ was born out of the friendship between Scott and Nick Pihakis and their mutual appreciation for Southern barbecue techniques, including smoking the whole hog. Since its opening in 2017, the restaurant has grown from its humble beginnings in Charleston, South Carolina, to its multiple locations in Alabama, Atlanta, and Nashville.

Rodney Scott's Meets Miami: What's on the Menu?

While the menu centers on classic Southern whole hog barbecue, popular dishes include pork belly burnt ends and pork skin nachos. Meat offerings vary and include prime brisket, smoked turkey, pit-cooked chicken, spare ribs, sausage, catfish sandwich, and pulled pork.

The menu features five sauces: the house signature, "Rodney's Sauce," a vinegar, red pepper, and black pepper blend, and a few with a sweet kick like the "Kathy's" or "Bama 16!" sauces. The now-famous North Alabama white sauce pairs better with turkey or chicken, while the "Other" is perfect as a pourable sauce with a little tang.

As for sides, guests can find traditional mac & cheese, collard greens, potato salad, coleslaw, baked beans, and salads.

The Southern barbecue spot joins a lineup of acclaimed restaurants and anticipated openings in the neighborhood, including Sunny's Steakhouse by Will Thompson and Carey Hynes of Jaguar Sun; La Natural, which is a Michelin-approved pizzeria and natural wine destination; Ogawa, the intimate Michelin-starred omakase experience; Imperial Moto, a specialty coffee roaster and cafĂ©; Fooq's by Chef David Foulquier; and Bar Bucce from the same team behind Macchialina.

No official date has been released for the upcoming opening of Rodney Scott's Whole Hog BBQ. New Times will update this article as soon as a date is announced.
