Barely a month after chef Alberto Cabrera announced he was morphing his Coral Gables restaurant Bread + Butter into Little Bread Cuban Sandwich Co., the restaurant is up and running.
Located at 2330 Salzedo St., it is open daily for breakfast, lunch, and early dinner and Friday and Saturday evening for supper. In addition, Cabrera plans to introduce Sunday brunch in about a week.
The restaurant specializes in the sandwiches that made the Little Havana shop such a success — the Cuban, Elena Ruz, and medianoche — but will also offer an expanded menu including sandwiches such as a lamb vaca
The chef/restaurateur explains he wanted to adapt the restaurant to better suit Coral Gables and the many businesspeople who seek daily lunch options. "In Little Havana, we see people coming in for the same sandwiches all the time. We did a soft opening for a few days in Coral Gables, and we're seeing that our lunch bowls are doing really well."
The lunch bowls allow diners to mix and match their favorite proteins with a grain, side, and sauce. Choices include marinated skirt steak ($10), rotisserie chicken ($8), turkey picadillo ($8), and fish ($10) paired with brown rice, greens, and other items. Sauces and sides include maduros, salad, and pickled onions. Cabrera says he's keeping prices reasonable. "You can get a bowl for under ten bucks. I wanted to do that purposely. People want to be able to afford to eat good food."
In addition to bowls and sandwiches, Little Bread offers four salads — a kale caesar, a Greek, a chopped Asian salad, and a grain variety with barley, brown rice, quinoa, and farro ($8 each) — as well as a daily ceviche, smoked wings, and sliders ($3 to $5).
The new location also serves breakfast from 8 to 11 a.m. daily. Items include breakfast sammies like the McFruffin — a morning frita topped with a sunny-side-up egg and American cheese ($6). Lighter options include an açaí bowl with fruit ($7) and a Cuban breakfast ($6) of two eggs, tostada, and croquetas, served with cafe con leche.
Cabrera says that the Little Havana restaurant will also offer some of these menu items in the coming weeks but that each location will maintain its own identity unique to the neighborhood where it resides.
