“Because she does not act, she observes, she feels, she records; a color, a smile awakens profound echoes within her; her destiny is outside her.” Although Simone de Beauvoir wrote this in her book the Second Sex back in 1949, the phrase could have well been penned to describe FKA twigs’ craft.
The British musician, dancer, actor, and overall charismatic artist recently received her first Grammy Award for her album Eusexua, taking home the recognition for Best Dance/Electronic Album. This weekend, she will kick off her Body High Tour in Miami with a show at Factory Town, marking her first performance in the Magic City since before the pandemic. The disruptive and multi-talented Eartheater will open the show.
We caught up with Twigs a couple of days ago, while she was rehearsing for the tour for a special edition of our podcast, Midweek Cafecito. We call this short format “Coffee Break,” because it’s as unexpected as it is needed — a quick but meaningful conversation in the middle of a busy week.
Via Zoom, Twigs and New Times music editor Flor Franceschetti talk not only about Eusexua and the upcoming tour, but also about the singer’s multicultural background and her special connection to Miami.
FKA Twigs Take on Miami
“Every time I’ve gone to Miami, what I’ve actually tapped into is this crazy underground artist community that lives there,” she shares.
For an artist whose work often blurs the lines between experimental electronic music, dance, and performance art, the connection to a city like Miami — where underground culture thrives alongside global spectacle — feels fitting.
“It feels like there’s so much culture,” she adds. “There’s this kind of culture clash, different communities, different influences, and that vibrancy comes from the art and the people.”
That sense of freedom and collective energy is also something Twigs hopes audiences will feel during the Body High Tour. As she puts it, the live show is meant to be a space where people can let go.
“The safe space has gone from like 200 people to a few thousand, and now arenas,” she says. “The safe space has expanded.”
