The employment rate in Florida increased slightly in November to 11.5 percent, up from 11.3 percent in October according to the South Florida Business Journal. That’s the highest rate since May 1975, when 11.9 percent of Floridians were out of a job, and translates to roughly 1 million people out of work.
However, the picture in Miami-Dade appears to be getting better. The unemployment rate here fell 1.3 percent between October and November, from 11.8 percent to 10.5 percent. That’s still a lot higher than the 6.5 percent rate in November 2008 and is still higher than the national rate of 10 percent.
And the drop doesn’t translate to other South Florida counties — both Broward and Palm Beach saw their unemployment rate rise. But the total rate for the Miami-Ft. Lauderdale-Pompano Beach metro area fell by 0.4 percent to 10.6 percent.
