You can call us a lot of things — mostly expletives — but you can’t accuse of failing to grab your attention. A lot of that has to do with the image we put out there, and I’m not talking about our sense of entitlement.

While content is key, it’s our covers that have the power to compel you to stop and pick up a copy. That’s where art direction comes in; assembling and designing 52 covers a year is a daunting task.

That’s why we asked recently departed art director Pam Shavalier to choose the ten covers she thought were her best work of the past 12 months. They all have something in common: They are eye-catching, controversial, and perhaps the most-talked-about of the year.
