South Florida Cities Offer Mobile DMV Services Amid Long Lines

As if going to the DMV isn't bad enough, Miami residents routinely spend hours waiting to renew their driver's licenses. South Florida cities hope to alleviate the DMV mess by providing their residents with mobile license services.

The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) offers the Florida Licensing on Wheels (FLOW) mobile office, where people can renew or update their licenses without waiting at a DMV in Miami-Dade or Broward Counties.

People gather around the DMV before dawn on any day for their driver's license needs, while local DMV offices struggle to keep up with demand, especially ahead of the looming Real ID deadline on May 7.

Over the next few months, local municipalities will host mobile DMV pop-up events so residents can avoid the DMV madness. Driving tests, however, are not offered.

The mobile DMV will be available to Surfside residents on Tuesday, April 22, at 10 a.m. outside Town Hall. The 40 spots are first-come, first-served. Registration is required at [email protected].

According to the FLHSMV calendar, a FLOW mobile office will be in Miami on May 6, May 15, and May 19. There will also be a mobile DMV event for North Bay Village residents on May 19.

The City of Homestead is hosting its mobile DMV event on May 27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the William Dickinson Community Center. Appointments are required.

Coral Springs has mobile DMV appointments on June 6, but all the slots have already been booked.

Residents must bring proof of identification, such as a U.S. birth certificate or valid U.S. passport, proof of Social Security number, and two different proofs of address. For name changes, you'll need a marriage license, divorce decree, or court order.
