Independent Journalism in Miami Needs You
We need to raise $10,000 by August 9 to support the reporting our community depends on. Reader support keeps us independent and is playing a larger role in funding local journalism and shaping what comes next. If you believe independent local journalism matters, make a contribution today.
Twenty-three-year-old Diana Demayo, a recent graduate of the University of Miami, was beaten to death in Michigan last month. Twenty-four-year-old Peter Dabish, whose father co-founded the nationwide Powerhouse Gyms chain, turned himself in Wednesday for the murder (Dabish himself may own 20 percent of the company).
Dabish allegedly beat Demayo to death on March 11 in a downtown Detroit apartment, before calling police to report that she had suffered an overdose. He is charged with first degree murder and torture. Demayo’s family also claims Dabish repeatedly made harassing phone calls to them before and after the attack.
Demayo’s dog, which she adopted from a Miami-Dade shelter while a freshmen at UM, was also in the apartment the night of the attack. He was taken to a pet resort shortly after staffers realized his coat was stained with Demayo’s blood.
Police haven’t established a motive yet. Demayo and Dabish were described as friends.
