Independent Journalism in Miami Needs You
We need to raise $10,000 by August 9 to support the reporting our community depends on. Reader support keeps us independent and is playing a larger role in funding local journalism and shaping what comes next. If you believe independent local journalism matters, make a contribution today.
There’s a good chance you’re an active Twitterer. Whether you’re Tweeting because the club you’re at is so boring there’s nothing else to do, or because your’re stuck in standstill traffic and decide to risk out a Tweet, Miamians like you Tweet a lot.
A recent study of geotagged Tweets sent this June shows that Miamians Tweet the fourth most of any city in America, and the 18th most of any city in the world. Which is impressive considering we’re no where even close to being one of the most populous cities in America or in the world.
The numbers come from Semiocast, which analyzed geotagged Tweets (about 27 percent of total Tweets) sent in June 2012.
In the US, only people in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago sent more Tweets than Miamians. Jakarta, the the capitol of Indonesia with a metro population of 23 million, Tweets more than any city in the world.
Though the rankings do say they’re taking “cities” into account, we’d have to guess they’re analyzing all Tweets in Miami-Dade, if not the South Florida metro area.
