The Miami Heat's Tyler Herro went viral last night, not for his basketball skills.
Apparently, the NBA All-Star doesn't believe in most recorded history from before 1950, including Christopher Columbus' landing in America in 1492, or events afterward, like Wilt Chamberlain's 100-point game in 1962, and the moon landing in 1969.
In a livestream with popular Twitch streamers Adin Ross and N3on, Herro fielded questions from the live comment audience. About 25 minutes in, one audience member asked Herro, "Hey Tyler, do you think a prime Wilt [Chamberlain] would be top five in today's league?"
"I don't even know what Wilt looked like, played like," Herro responded.
"Do you think he dropped 100 [points]?" Ross asked, at which point Herro dropped the banger: "Do you think history is like a real thing?"
"No, I don't believe in history," Herro said, shaking his head, as the conversation continued. The statement seemed to surprise the two streamers.
"You don't believe in shit that happened, like, 200 years ago?" asked Ross.
"Hell no," said Herro.
"What about the moon landing?" asked N3on.
"No, I don't believe in that; I don't believe in anything that happened before 1950," Herro said.
The riveting conversation went on to question whether Christopher Columbus (who may actually be a guy named "Bob, according to N3on) landed in the Americas in 1492.
When someone on the stream commented that "they documented it," Herro said, "I don't believe that shit! I never read that shit in school."
Thankfully, the conversation moved past history denial. Still, the segment went viral on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, and Reddit, where many commenters criticized Herro for not believing in recorded history.
"Nightmare blunt rotation," the top Reddit comment, with over 7,000 upvotes, reads.
"The Internet has made a lot of people at the same time unimaginably stupid and absolutely determined to have a bold opinion on everything," another commenter wrote.
"Why does he sound like that when he's from suburban Wisconsin?" one user asked.
X was also unkind to Herro.
"Never mind, make 4 years of college a requirement for NBA players," one user wrote.
"The moon landing was after 1950. Stick to hoops, bro," another said.
One even questioned the intelligence of all three young men: "That room got a total brain cell count of 3 and that's being nice."
Ross himself is no stranger to controversy — Twitch has banned him eight times since April of 2020. He recently emerged from a two-year ban for "failing to control unmoderated comments in his chat," according to Indy100. Ross has featured several right-wing figures on his podcast, including President Trump, white supremacist Nick Fuentes, and Andrew Tate, whom he reportedly helped the Romanian government arrest by telling a live audience about Tate's plan to flee Romania.
Herro is currently in the off-season for the Miami Heat; his sixth season with the team will kick off in October.
