Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez yesterday proposed cutting the county’s operating budget by $350 million. That includes whacking the library system’s $50 million budget to $24.5 million.It seems 13 libraries will be shut down.
Riptide contributor Theo Karantsalis obtained the list of threatened libraries Thursday morning.

- Little River
- Edison Center
- Fairlawn
- South Shore
- North Central
- Culmer
- Country Walk
- Sunset
- Palm Springs North
- Virrick Park
- Tamiami
- Civic Center
In addition, library spokeswoman Victoria Galan told Karantsalis the proposed cuts would force all libraries to ax tutoring programs and eliminate evening and Sunday hours.
