Support the independent voice of Miami and help keep the future of New Times free.

The end of the year is almost upon us and since a lot of us are on vacation and too lazy to do any actual reporting, we fill up our time doing awesome end-of-year pieces recapping everything that was. Still, it's nice to take a step back and look at everything that was produced. And with 52 weeks in the year, that means we had 52 chances to piss off the residents of Miami-Dade County via our eye-catching covers. This year we had everyone from Iggy Pop to Star War superfans pose for our cameras. What will 2010 hold in store? Well, now that we are going glossy, let's hope for plenty of more head-turning design.

Take a look back at the best covers of 2009 as chosen by art director Pam Shavalier.

Keep Miami New Times Free... Since we started Miami New Times, it has been defined as the free, independent voice of Miami, and we would like to keep it that way. Offering our readers free access to incisive coverage of local news, food and culture. Producing stories on everything from political scandals to the hottest new bands, with gutsy reporting, stylish writing, and staffers who've won everything from the Society of Professional Journalists' Sigma Delta Chi feature-writing award to the Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism. But with local journalism's existence under siege and advertising revenue setbacks having a larger impact, it is important now more than ever for us to rally support behind funding our local journalism. You can help by participating in our "I Support" membership program, allowing us to keep covering Miami with no paywalls.
