Independent Journalism in Miami Needs You

We need to raise $10,000 by August 9 to support the reporting our community depends on. Reader support keeps us independent and is playing a larger role in funding local journalism and shaping what comes next. If you believe independent local journalism matters, make a contribution today.

$10,000

To kick off the summer properly, Coral Gables Congregational Church (CGCC) is pushing nightly bingo aside for bigger and better things. Beginning June 1, CGCC, through its Community Arts Program (CAP), will hold a series of jazz concerts every Thursday, including performances by the two-time Grammy-nominated jazz singer Karrin Allyson and the two-time Grammy-nominated classical guitarist Christopher Parkening. The series will begin with a performance by the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra. Other acts feature violinist Arabella Steinbacher, baritone singer Jubilant Sykes, and jazz vocalist Marlena Shaw. The concluding event will be a performance by the Ravi Coltrane Quartet, led by Ravi Coltrane, a composer, saxophonist, and the son of legendary jazz musician John Coltrane. All concerts will be held at the church, which seats up to 450 people. And for those actually looking to learn something this summer, CGCC will also host Young Musicians’ Summer Master Classes, where students will have the opportunity to train with Steinbacher, Parkening, and Coltrane.
