recently pointed out Pitchfork Media’s pretty unforgiving review of Trilla. Yes, that’s a decimal point — on Pitchfork’s sort of infamous 10-point scale, I’ve never understood how reviewers arrive at the exact number. Why is it a 2.4, and not a 2.6 or a 2.3? Is there some secret, finely calibrated scoring scale? Inquiring minds want to know.
Also, I’m 95% sure that most serious Rick Ross fans don’t care what Pitchfork has to say, or are unaware of its existence…. Still, some quotes from the review:
–The second album from the Miami rapper whose sole strength as an MC is that he may or may not have touched a kilo of soft a few times in his life. Ross’s attempts at self-definition– “This Me”, “Here I Am”, “The Boss”– are as calculated and chilly as his odes to consumption are revealingly spirited (“Maybach Music”, “Billionaire”, “Luxury Tax”– in that sequence, no less)

Zing! That may be too many multisyllabic words for a Ross review. But still, ouch. — Arielle Castillo
