Oasis — remember them? “Wonderwall,” et cetera? Yeah, you probably heard them — almost a decade ago. That leads one to wonder if Don’t Believe the Truth, Oasis’s first release in three years, is the band publicly debating its own relevance. The music offers some indication; there is hardly any of the filler among the album’s eleven tracks that fans of the Gallagher brothers have come to expect. Standouts such as the title cut and the Velvet Underground-inspired paean “Mucky Fingers” prove that the boys have been hard at work, crafting a batch of perfect pop gems. And for good reason — no band really wants to be remembered for one hit song.
