Whoever said that all good things come in threes probably wasn't talking about music festivals, but they might've had a premonition about III Joints. Now in its ninth hazy edition, Miami's weed-friendly mini-festival returns on Saturday, April 19, at Factory Town with its biggest lineup yet.
This year features six stages, 20 food vendors, and enough 420-friendly vibes to keep the party going until 5 a.m.
III Joints has significantly evolved since its inaugural edition at the Anderson in 2016.
"It does feel like a festival now, but the one thing we've stayed committed to is that it's a 99 percent local Miami lineup," says Santi Vidal (AKA True Vine), the festival's booking coordinator. This year, the event blends 420 and Easter themes with an Easter egg hunt featuring 12 "golden goose eggs" stuffed with prizes like VIP passes to III Points 2025 and names on the phase one lineup.
As always, there will be plenty of DJ sets, including smokin' back-to-back sets like Saturnsarii and Berrakka and Alexx in Chainss and House of Pris. Live bands will cover classics at the Reaper Theater, with the Farm Boys doing the Grateful Dead and Nineties grunge channeled by Poorgrrrl and Donzii. "We just give the liberty to the artists," explains Michelle Granado, the event's director of artist relations. Between live sets, there will be comedians, a magician, and post-midnight film screenings courtesy of West Palm Beach's Subtropic Film Festival. "It really allows us an opportunity to do fun things that are non-music related that we may not have the chance to do in a traditional festival setting," says Alexis Sosa-Toro (AKA Sister System), the director of programming and operations.
The Trippy Market will feature independent vendors selling everything from ceramics and vintage clothes to accessories and T-shirts. A limited run of blacklight III Points posters, designed by Jotapepsi, will also be available for purchase.
On the food tip, there's no shortage of munchie-fueled magic. Snow cones, pizza, burgers, and more will be available, with some vendors serving items from special 420 menus. You can eat oysters while enjoying trippy coral macro shots at the ambient stage thanks to Coral Morphologic.
The VIP lounge features flower activations by the Flowery Dispensary and 710 Labs. Flash menus for tattoos will be available for anyone seeking some new ink. The Frick Frack Blackjack activation requires players to pony up an item with sentimental value to play. If you lose, you can still play to win it back. You can opt to watch if you think those stakes are too high to participate.
The festival will also host Gift of Life, an organization that runs a bone marrow donor registry. "It was a cause that is very close to cofounder David Sinopoli and something that he needed in his youth, and his life was saved because of it," Sosa-Toro explains. Though this is only the organization's second year at the festival, it has already collected hundreds of swabs, leading to two matches. Anyone who participates between 6 and 10 p.m. can enter the chance to win four all-access passes to III Points.
Beyond 420, III Joints' focus is on locals. "It's important for all of us to make sure that everyone has access to experiences like these and to preserve that accessibility to the people who really love music and really contribute to the city and who may not be able to afford a high-ticket item," Sosa-Toro says. That means affordable time-tiered tickets and come-as-you-are energy that creates respite, especially in an expensive city like Miami.
While the past two years were 100 percent local, this year features some bigger names on the bill, including Andrew VanWyngarden of MGMT, who will DJ under the name A.Deeplove; Helado Negro; and DJ Marko Speer of Khruangbin.
Whether you're coming to dance, vibe, thrift, or eat five tacos, III Joints promises an unforgettable 420 celebration. It's perhaps the only event where you can clutch your Easter basket in one hand and a joint in the other.
