Miami New Times editor Chuck Strouse has won the Sigma Delta Chi award for the nation’s best columns in a nondaily publication.
Strouse, a codger who writes so seldom that many people don’t even know he can hold a pen, topped all entries for five of his columns, including three about Louis Maxwell, a United Nations guard from Miami Gardens who was shot down under mysterious circumstances while protecting peacekeepers in Afghanistan.
Two other columns described the lousy case against accused terrorist Luis Posada Carriles (who was later found not guilty of lying to immigration authorities) and school officials’ incompetence in dealing with construction problems at the North Dade Center for Modern Languages, which Strouse’s children attend.
Also winning accolades from the Society for Professional Journalists, which hands out the awards, were Miami Herald reporter Jacqueline Charles, whom Strouse occasionally goaded when she was a high school kid, and Patty Calhoun, editor of Westword, which, like Miami New Times, is a Village Voice Media publication.
