Independent Journalism in Miami Needs You

We need to raise $10,000 by August 9 to support the reporting our community depends on. Reader support keeps us independent and is playing a larger role in funding local journalism and shaping what comes next. If you believe independent local journalism matters, make a contribution today.

$10,000

In an effort to bring to bring nightlife back to the historically black center of Miami, the Overtown Music Project has teamed up with Jackson’s Soul Food for the first installment of their Supper Club, It will include soul food, drinks and jazz (with a bit of blues). “There hasn’t been a nighttime event like this in Overtown in nearly 30 years,” said Amy Rosenberg, founder of the Overtown Music Project “so we decided to kick the sand and get people out to Overtown with our first ever supper club.”

The event at Jackson Soul Food kicks off this Friday night, September 7, at 7 p.m. with sounds by musicians who performed in Overtown back in its heyday — the 1940s. $25 gets you in the door to see Overtown legends like Joey Gilmore, Mel Dancy, Bobby Stringer, Tree Top, ad Fran Cina Jones.

Food will be provided by Jackson Soul Food, an iconic location and longstanding member of the community. The menu covers all the staples of Soul Food, and is served as a prix-fixe dinner for just $10. Dinner includes one entree, served with rice and cornbread, plus two soul food sides. Guests will also receive a complementary beer with wine available for purchase.

Tickets to the evening’s activities are still available and for anyone a little wary of parking their car in Overtown at night, the event promises secure parking. If that’s not enough to sway you, take a peek at the authentic southern grub the evening is serving, and you’ll see why it’s worth the trip.
