Independent Journalism in Miami Needs You

We need to raise $10,000 by August 9 to support the reporting our community depends on. Reader support keeps us independent and is playing a larger role in funding local journalism and shaping what comes next. If you believe independent local journalism matters, make a contribution today.

$10,000

It’s true: a blogger’s attention can be bought. Our affection? Not necessarily. But a gift of free food is usually welcome (as long as it ain’t worth an arm and a leg). The public relations rep for National Deli hot dogs figured this out just in time. Since Saturday is National Hot Dog Day, National Deli dispatched a wiener truck to New Times offices yesterday and fed us free franks.

Did you know National Deli is based in Miami? Neither did we. And we were told South Florida Char-Hut locations will be donating a portion of sales from every National Deli Hot Dog sold during the month of July to the Pap Corps Champions of Cancer Research, another South Florida-based group, so we felt it was worth plugging a hometown product with a purpose.

Perhaps now you understand why we’re telling you to consider picking up National Deli hot dogs at Publix, though you may already have another brand as your favorite. And you’ll just have to eat your franks plain because, unfortunately, National Mustard Day doesn’t occur until August 6 and there’s no designated “day” for ketchup or relish. Funky Purple Ketchup Day was celebrated July 30, 2001, but we just don’t want to know what that was all about.

Hey, who grabbed our buns?
