83. Cubi-Thai Sampler Plate

Cuban and Thai cuisine don’t have a whole lot in common besides the use of rice. But that hasn’t stopped Israel “Izzy” Valdez from serving both types of food at his Izzy’s Cubi-Thai Cuisine restaurant in the once-classic Sherry Frontenac Hotel in North Beach (Izzy’s dining room was recently renovated). There are two distinct menus, and two kitchens — one helmed by Cubans, the other by Asians. Seriously. But you can sample food from both countries via the Cubi-Thai sampler: Cleanly fried spring rolls; a puffy papa rellenos; a couple of croquetas (one chicken, one beef); and sweet/spicy Thai chicken drumsticks. Price is $7.95, which is quite the bargain.

Will you step up to support New Times this year?

At New Times, we’re small and scrappy — and we make the most of every dollar from our supporters. Right now, we’re $16,750 away from reaching our December 31 goal of $30,000. If you’ve ever learned something new, stayed informed, or felt more connected because of New Times, now’s the time to give back.
