Dreamers, artists, and tango lovers are invited to a free screening of the documentary La Gata: The Nine Lives of a Tango Singer Called ‘The Cat’ at 7:00 p.m. today at Centro Cultural Español. The film examines the life of “La Gata,” a then-79-year-old Argentine tango singer who moved to Miami in the late Eighties, and her struggle to make it in her new homeland. Director and producer, Julienne Gage — a New Times contributor — met Gata at a restaurant where she was performing for young hipsters. The two connected and Gage followed her subject for two-and-a-half years, documenting her adventures, challenges, and determination to stay young.

The documentary portrays her “glamorous lifestyle with her struggle to make ends meet, like every artist,” says Gage. Gata bridged a generational gap, reconnecting young Argentines with their homeland through nostalgia, her music, and her vivid personality. This picture of her nine lives is an exploration of beauty, aging, immigration, and cultural preservation.
