If you’re one of those jaded Miamians who likes to criticize the city as consisting of little more than aspiring hipsters and shiny new overpriced condo buildings, then it’s obvious that you haven’t yet been down to Cauley Square. From U.S. 1 it is indicated by little more than a brown sign for another ho-hum-seeming historic district. Turn off the main thoroughfare, however, and this quaint, tree-lined area reveals itself. Cauley Square offers a distinctly atypical Miami experience. It’s far enough off the beaten path that there aren’t hectic crowds or parking drama. Store owners smile without a predatory gleam in their eyes, and the tearoom, New Village Chalet restaurant, and numerous arts and crafts stores overflow with down-home charm and Southern hospitality. Try finding that on your beloved South Beach.

This is the perfect weekend to experience the pleasures of Cauley Square, thanks to the Antiques and Collectible Fair on Saturday, March 10, and the Classic Car Show today from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. On Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., the narrow lanes will be filled with booths offering delicious food and 50 different antique displays, ranging from jewelry and furniture to fine China and Lalique crystal. Today Cauley Square, which already feels like a verdant Twilight Zone portal to Miami’s more genteel past, will become a showcase for classic cars at least 25 years or older. Parking is free
