How do you grow a revolution? According to R.Y.P.E., the answer is one garden at a time. Yes, you read that right. R.Y.P.E (Reclaim Your Power and Equality), a grassroots organization based in Miami, is using herbs, fruits, and veggies to fight The Man. Believing sustainable community gardens will bring people together, the organization strives to end poverty, classism, sexism, racism, and homophobia. They’ve already begun, with two pieces of donated land in midtown and Wynwood. Even better than the healthful produce is the loving way it’s grown: through hands-on community involvement and many “group hugs.” This Friday at Sweat Records (5505 NE Second Ave., Miami), R.Y.P.E will host Grow the Revolution: Edible City Film Screening and Community Garden Forum. The fun, fast-paced film takes viewers on a journey through the global food movement. An open discussion addressing how everyone can get involved in building a sustainable, local food system will follow. Move over, Monsanto — R.Y.P.E has the right idea.
