Last year, the British choreographer and filmmaker Darshan Singh Bhuller debuted his stunning Caravaggio: Exile and Death, which combined hyper- physical dance, video, and an edgy, complex soundtrack from a variety of musicians to tell the violent, super-sexualized, lonely tale of the great painter’s life.
Now, his latest work that also makes ample use of video, Mapping #1, comes to the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center (3385 N.E. 188th St., Aventura) as part of a Repertory Dance Ensemble of New World program that will also include Prelude to Action from modern dance master Martha Graham. The evening will offer contemporary ballet and jazz dance pieces as well. What’s just as exciting as this original programming is that it will be performed by both the high school and college students from the New World School of the Arts. It often falls to the amateurs to take the most risks, after all – and local audiences should thank the heavens that they do.
