Ask any teenage fanboy who spends his time in class doodling in the back of a notebook, and he will tell you a comic-book artist is the coolest job in the world. Ask successful superhero illustrator Jerry deCaire, and he will tell you his industry offers more potential for self-expression and anatomical exaggeration than others. “Superheroes have enormous bodies and extremely small heads. Of the characters I have drawn, my favorite is Thor. And the character I’d love to draw would be the Silver Surfer,” says deCaire. Today comic-book lovers can learn to draw superheroes from this eloquent and enthusiastic illustrator, whose stylistic images have brought fresh life to silver-screen transplants, including X-Men, Conan the Barbarian, and The Phantom. Experienced artists and the drawing-impaired can learn how to sketch impressively muscled figures and gain insight on all things comic-book-related from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at ArtCenter/South Florida, 800 Lincoln Rd., Miami Beach. The workshop costs $35. Call 305-674-8278, ext. 15, or visit www.comicartist.net.
