12. Beatriz Monteavaro
This Hialeah home girl rocked out to Kiss and the Go-Gos while her age still registered as a single digit. "My musical interests probably stem from playing band to a Kiss record when I was eight with some childhood friends." Answering a call to pound the skins, drumming became Monteavaro's first creative outlet. Since then, she has expanded her artistic endeavors to create mind-warping art installations comprised of zombies, ghouls, and all other kinds of creepy things.

As a drummer, she is highly respected locally for her work in Beings. She has an onstage energy that keeps both the crowd and her band mates pumped. As an artist, her work has appeared all over the world and garnered glowing reviews.

She's shown locally at the Miami Art Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art, and Centro Cultural Espanol, as well as several others. Her world tour includes installations at the Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin in Paris, Tent in Holland, and Galerie Edward Mitterrand in Geneva. Fortunately for us, we can still catch her at home.

1. List five things that inspire you.

-Disney World and carnival rides, especially haunted houses
-Science fiction and horror movies
-Punk rock bands and the scenes that surround them

2. What was your last big project?

My last big project art-wise was putting together my installation When Will I See You Again for the "New Work Miami 2010" exhibition at the Miami Art Museum.

Music-wise it was probably going on tour with my band Beings.

3. What's your next big project?

Right now I'm installing some work for the SouthXeast Exhibition at the University Galleries at Florida Atlantic University. That opening reception is at 6 p.m on February 4 at the Schmidt Center and Ritter Art Galleries at FAU. I am making work for a solo exhibition I'll be having at Galerie Sultana in Paris, France, in May. And I was chosen as one of the recipients of the South Florida Cultural Consortium Visual and Media Arts Fellowship Award for 2009-2010 and will be showing at the corresponding exhibition at the Frost Museum at Florida International University in May as well.

4. Why do you do what you do?

I do what I do because I get a lot of satisfaction out of it.

5. What's something you want Miami to know about you?

I want Miami to know that I have a blue snaggletooth.

What's something you don't want Miami to know about you?

I don't want Miami to know that my blue snaggletooth is missing its original weapon.
