Advertising Can't Do It Alone

The challenges facing local news organizations are very real. That's why reader support matters more than ever. If you believe independent journalism matters, make a contribution today and help us reach our summer fundraising goal of $10,000 by August 9.

$10,000

In case you hadn’t already noticed, Dave Barry isn’t just a Pulitzer Prize-winning humor columnist. He’s also a shameless self-promoter and gratuitous merchandiser whose online store is packed with all kinds of useless, overpriced crap, including “Dave Barry for President” T-shirts, hoodies, baby bibs, trucker hats, tote bags, teddy bears, dog clothes, beer steins, and thongs. The worst part: His goofy moppet face is plastered all over the stuff.

And now, Barry is dropping another merch bomb. This Saturday at 3 p.m., Miami’s favorite unfunny funnyman will stop by Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden for the purposes of peddling his umpteenth book of babble, I’ll Mature When I’m Dead: Dave Barry’s Amazing Tales of Adulthood. For subnormal losers, an afternoon with Barry and a copy of his newest essay collection costs $40. The elite (AKA Fairchild members), however, pay only $35.
