Forget Calle Ocho and Christmas: September 30 is National Museum Day! Okay, so it’s not the kind of holiday that makes you giddy with anticipation, but it does get you into two of our local bastions of knowledge for free. Each year museums nationwide follow the Smithsonian’s lead and offer nerds like us a day of education gratis. Use it as an excuse to alter your mind with something other than $15 cocktails on South Beach. The Miami Museum of Science and Planetarium will let you into the planetarium, theater, and wildlife center for free. (There is still a charge for the Titanic exhibit, though. What gives?) Along with some interactive stuff that cleverly teaches things you should have learned in high school, the planetarium’s multimedia show employs Vegas-style lighting and sound to guide you through the final frontier. Call 305-646-4200, or visit www.miamisci.org. Visit www.smithsonianmag.com/museumday to find other participating museums.
