The spotlight will again be on Haiti when University of Miami history professor Kate Ramsey talks about her book The Spirits and the Law: Vodou and Power in Haiti. She argues that when the government outlawed spells and superstitious practices, it reinforced the marginalization, stigmatization, and exploitation of the Haitian people. The stigma remains strong. Just last year, dozens of people, most of them vodou priests, were lynched in Haiti. Angry mobs blamed them for the cholera epidemic in the wake of the 2010 earthquake.
