On Friday, New York Fashion Week came to an end and London Fashion Week began. While our British counterparts are causing a sensation with spray-on clothing and the like, New York fashion week was a slightly more subdued affair, flaunting classic silhouettes in sophisticated palettes and a ’70s redux that is continuing on the London catwalks. Most talked-about moments include Tom Ford’s celebrated return to fashion (though us mere mortals will have to wait to see the collection as control freak Ford wouldn’t allow any cameras to his show), and Tommy Hilfiger’s 25th anniversary celebration on the runway. But, as always, the greatest highlight was the fashion. From ruffles and florals, to whites and stripes, here, our top ten trends from shows this side of the pond.
1. Bright Whites
This trend was the blank canvas to many of the seasons more colorful pieces. We saw whites in everything, from heavily tailored structural pieces to ethereal, feminine dresses, and gowns. If donning, steer clear of pasta, red wine, and head wounds.
2. Broderie Anglaise
Eyelet and broderie anglaise (which translates to English embroidery) are one of the biggest fashion trends of the season. The feminine cottons add an instant update and girlish allure to casual, tailored classics, such as shorts and jackets. Some may think the look is a little too jailbait-esque, but what would fashion be without its obsession with youth?
3. Patterns and Brights
Simple silhouettes were offset by some complicated uses of pattern. Designs took on mixed patterns, same pattern in mixed colorways, and the reappearance of contrasting florals. We imagine this is a trickle-down effect from previous season’s bohemian/hobo/Grey Gardens trends.
4. Stripes
Stripes appeared in almost every palette and more
often than not, they were offset with white. The simple, graphic design
appeared on daytime cottons and evening organzas, always lending a
classic statement to the overall look. Look for inspiration from prison jumpsuits and
French sailors.
5. Summer Tweeds
Lightweight tweeds were another key fabric trend of the season. It works best with tailored pieces and the nautical trend. Smoking pipe optional.
6. Asymmetric Hemlines
From one-shoulder tops to high-low hemlines, this was a huge trend on the NY runways. We think it may be inspired from the deeply slanted lines from this year’s fiscal charts.
7. Halternecks
An instant update to tees, dresses and so forth, while also a simple way to bring a ’70s element into your look.
8. Color
When not showing all-white garb, the palette for the
season is heavily focused on the primaries when it comes to head-to-toe
looks. Think yellows, blues, navy, tobacco brown, poppy red, and greens.
Throw the color wheel to the curb. We saw aquas mixed with purples and
other horrid, but purposeful, color clashing.
9. Ruffles
Ruffles are set continue to be a main trend for
Spring/ Summer. They add a touch of feminine glamour to the simple
silhouettes of the season. Plus, ruffles have ridges.
10. The ’70s
We saw a major nod to the ’70s in many of the runways’ silhouettes, from the elongating pant shapes (High-rise, wide legged) and ruffled blouses, to the dungarees and all-in-ones. No sign of disco yet
