You know those little 4×6-inch booklets that you find along the wall next to the dart board at Lester’s or in a neat pile sitting on the bar at Gramps? You know the ones — they’ve always got those interesting pictures and some funky reading material stitched together in an incredibly tight space of pages. For the uninitiated, those booklets are called zines, and in Miami, many of those zines are created by the Miami “counter culture art collective” Strangeways.
Strangeways has been printing zines in the city for two years now, and with their 18th issue in the wild, they’ve finally decided to burst from their small-scale constraints and are releasing their first magazine, an occasion they’ll be celebrating tonight with a show presented by The GO! SHOP at Nicelook Gallery in Wynwood.
The cats at Strangeways have done a lot of legwork in two short years, and the content of their publication over the last dozen and a half issues is proof of that earnest effort. They’ve comprised a collective of contributing artists, as well as opening their zine to themed submissions, and the result has consistently been a product of substance and interest.
At tonight’s shindig, the Nicelook Gallery will be showing pieces from an array of the group’s artists, from the Miami graffiti heavyweight, Augor, to Jessy Nite and her über-Miami palette of vibrant pastel colors. All in all, the evening will showcase works from 15 artists. The band Mothersky will also be performing, and there’ll be complimentary cocktails. Plus, you can buy a copy of the magazine, which will be on sale at the gallery.
And even if you don’t buy it, go to the gallery and show these guys some love. They deserve it and you deserve a night’s worth of fascinating conversation, stimulating artwork, nice people, and booze.
The Strangeways group show will kick off at 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 25, at the Nicelook Gallery at 25th St and NW 2nd Ave, Miami, inside the Wynwood Walls garden.
