We’re big fans of the Moth, a storytelling series with the tag line “True Stories Told Live.” Everyday folks — as well as acclaimed performers and writers such as Margaret Cho, Jonathan Ames, Ethan Hawke, Gay Talese, and Moby — have been enthralling us with tales from their lives on public radio stations since 1997 (and more recently the Moth podcast). And now Miami, arguably the weird-true-story capital of the world, has its own series called Lip Service.
Although there is no theme for the October installment, Lip Service organizer Andrea Askowitz noticed a common thread in the selected readings: the idea that things are not always as they seem, but sometimes they are. Esther Martinez tells a story about perverts on public transportation. Sharon Rothberg questions what we know about time. Dena Stewart shares a public bathroom with Jackie O, and Jeffrey Weinstock makes a false assumption about his father.
