The only Chilean filmmaking that comes to mind are the videos that those poor trapped miners are sending up to their relatives. That’s perhaps all the more reason to check out this week’s Cine! Chilean Film Festival at the Tower Theater. The festival, which showcases some of Chile’s best films, opens this Friday at 9:15 p.m. with a comedy called The Gift (El Regalo). Winner of the Italian Trieste Festival’s best movie award, the film follows a retiree vacationing in Chile. The fest, which runs through this Thursday, includes screenings of Teresa, about a sex-obsessed Chilean poet and writer; A Stop Away From You (A un Metro de Tí), where young lovers meet on Santiago’s subway; and Red Eyes (Ojos Rojos), a documentary about Chile’s team in the World Cup. Tickets cost $5 for students and seniors and $6 for all others. Proceeds will benefit victims of the Chilean earthquake, but we hope some of that aid will also go to those Chilean videographers trapped underground.
