Independent Journalism in Miami Needs You
We need to raise $10,000 by August 9 to support the reporting our community depends on. Reader support keeps us independent and is playing a larger role in funding local journalism and shaping what comes next. If you believe independent local journalism matters, make a contribution today.
Love conquers all this weekend, when 75 area students ages 12 to 17 will perform the classic Bernstein and Sondheim musical West Side Story at the Roxy Performing Arts Center (1645 SW 107th Ave., Miami).
Twenty-four Miami-Dade schools have at least one student among the cast, and all proceeds go to the Roxy Theatre Group’s Student Scholarship Fund. The RTG provides after-school and summer performing arts training for area children, so it’s definitely a worthy cause in these strange economic times. ($2 billion isn’t enough for a baseball stadium, but $11 million for the entire county’s arts budget? Too much! Knife it to pieces!)
Tickets cost $20. The curtain rises at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday. (There are also three performances the following weekend, too.) Call 305-226-0030.
