On July 20, 1810, Colombia declared independence from Spain. Nine years later, the Spaniards withdrew in an exhausted huff as the victorious revolutionaries, led by Simón Bolívar and Francisco Santander, convened a constitutional convention and a new government. Interestingly, the name Colombia then referred to most of South America, and Bolívar dreamed of a federal republic spanning the continent.
That dream might be history, but celebrating Colombia’s independence is the present. This Friday from 4 – 6 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. – 11 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 11 p.m., head to the Fair Expo Center for the Colombian Independence Day Festival, where more than a dozen Latin music artists will keep you from standing still. Big names include Latin Grammy-nominated Victor Manuelle, reggaeton duo Zion and Lennox, Billboard chart climber Toby Love, merengue star Eddy Herrera, and many others. Of course, there will be Colombian food and arts and crafts for sale.
