If you’re wondering, “Who in hell is Pupy y Los Que Son Son?” you’re not alone. Only the most dedicated Cuban musicologists are likely to have heard of the band. So let’s delve into a little history lesson.
Cuban musical director César de las Mercedes Pedroso Fernández, AKA Pupy, formed the group in 2001 after playing with orchestras such as Cuba Nueva, Sensación, Chapottín, Fascinación, and Charangón de Elio Revé. The Cuban pianist and composer is probably best known for his work tickling the ivories for timba supergroup Los Van Van and writing many of its most popular songs. In its ten years, Pupy y Los Que Son Son has released four records, thrilling fans of Cuban jams with its signature island vibe.
