You don’t have to be a student playing hooky to enjoy the University of Miami’s Bill Cosford cinema. Named for the dearly departed former professor and film critic, the Cos lives up to its moniker as Miami’s grooviest art house, where big-screen fanfare and cushioned seats put some glamour back into a night at the cinema. Beginning December 8, the theater will inject a little high culture into the movies with the La Scala opera series. These operas have been recorded in high-definition to please the eyes; surround sound – which will no doubt blast more than a few high notes – will take care of the ears.
The series starts with Franco Zeffirelli’s Aïda and will continue in 2008 with other classics including Tristan und Isolde, La Traviata, Maria Stuarda, La Forza del Destino, and Il Trittico. The Bill Cosford Cinema is tucked away in the middle of the University of Miami Campus, 1111 Memorial Dr., Coral Gables.
