It’s about time we give it up for Peter DeBoer. The rookie head coach wasn’t exactly a hot name around the NHL when the Florida Panthers hired him, and not many people expected him to be able to do much with a team missing its offensive leader and captain, Olli Jokinen. Halfway through his first season, DeBoer has the troops playing their hearts out almost every night, is making great decisions with his goaltenders, and is keeping the Cats in position to make a late-season playoff run. Young players such as Stephen Weiss and David Booth are stepping up and making their coach look even better.

If DeBoer can continue developing his young players, the Panthers will become a team to be reckoned with for years to come. Check them out as they host division rivals Atlanta Thrashers at 1 p.m. for as little as $17 at the BankAtlantic Center.
