Bump. Set. Kill! If those words get your heart racing, then you’ll be pumped to hear about the Miami-Dade College Shark Girls Volleyball Camp, going on through Friday, July 11, and run by MDC volleyball head coach Ilida Medero. Unfamiliar with her credentials? She and her Lady Sharks are coming off back-to-back national junior college titles to go with three other titles since 1990, and an insane 440-26 record during that stretch. Campers will focus on individual skills in the morning, including the basics of serving, passing, hitting, and locking, to make them a fearsome presence near the net. Afternoon sessions explore team skills. Other topics cover complete team training, mental and physical conditioning, and optimal nutrition, plus individual analysis via video. The camp is for junior high and high school-age girls, with players grouped according to skill level. Cost is $100. The fun goes on at the Gibson Center Gym at MDC’s Kendall campus, 11011 SW 104th St.; call 305-237-3065. — By John Anderson

It’s hard to find someone who actually follows the local major-league baseball team, the Florida Marlins. And with good reason. After all, fans have felt abused by cruddy play and poor management decisions. Remember when the knuckleheads traded off most of the 1997 World Series Championship team? Baseball junkies have good reason to feel reluctant about falling head over heels in love with the Marlins’ lefty rookie sensation, pitcher Dontrelle Willis. With a high-kicking and goofy-looking windup, the magnetic Willis has led the team to a recent winning streak. If that’s not enough to make fans notice, the youngster is only the fourth pitcher since 1920 to win 8 of his first 10 starts before his 22nd birthday. Run quick to watch the young phenom before he’s traded away in typical fish fashion. Although the team is out of town this all-American weekend, check it out on TV against the Philadelphia Phillies and later on in the week, the Chicago Cubs, from where Willis was originally traded. — By Juan Carlos Rodriguez
