On the tail end of women’s history month, there’s some good news for the women of Miami. A new study shows that the Magic City is one of the best paying cities for women.
According to the website 24/7 Wall Street, the Miami-Ft. Lauderdale corridor ranks number six among pay for women in metro areas. But it’s not quite all good news: Miami women still only earn 86.4 percent of what their male counterparts earn.
The website estimates that women have a median earning of $34,644, while men’s median earning averages $40,079. Women are fairing best in art-related jobs, where they earn on par with their male counterparts. While in “community and social service occupations, women made up a majority of the workforce, and also had higher median earnings than men in similar jobs. This helped narrow the overall pay gap in the area.”
Unsurprisingly, the study also found that wages for both men or women are lower than national averages, particularly in those equal pay art-related fields. (Can we get on that, Miami?)
So while it means that the pay gap is still very real in Miami, that women in the metro area are closing it faster than their national counterparts. It’s currently estimated that nationally women “earned just 78.8% of men’s pay, or about $10,000 less.” Tuscon; McAllen, Texas; Sacramento; Los Angeles; and Fresno all outpaced Miami in closing the pay gap.
For once, Florida has something to brag about: there are no Florida cities on 24/7 Wall Street’s worst paying cities for women.
