Monday – Sunday: With all the attention to The Heat Lightning’s Jersey Shore sock puppets, maybe you should check out more softies (and hardies) at Broward’s Bear + Bird Gallery. “Peculiar Playmates: Curious Sculptural Artworks,” which opened this past weekend, includes handmade oddities, including stuffed softies and ceramic figurines that are both anthropomorphic and monstrous. So maybe Sock Snooki makes an appearance?
On Thursday, enjoy a free night of imbibing and book talk. Labeled Algonquin Night, the Books & Books evening begins and ends with free wine and beer tasting with expert critics. In between, hear from author Brock Clarke (An Arsonist’s Guide to Writers’ Homes in New England, Exley) and from the indie imprint Algonquin Books. Limit your intake, as Dorothy Parker said, “Three drinks and I’m under the table, four and I’m under my host.” If you’ve read this far, you’re probably an Algonquin Table fan, so here’s a creepy/wonderful video where some fool animated a portrait of Parker:
Friday: You’re not going to believe this, but opening night of the
Brazilian Film Festival is free. They’ll show the winning short and
feature films from last year’s festival at Lincoln Road’s Colony
Theatre. Watch “Sildenafil,” a short film where a wife force-feeds
Viagra to her hubby, who suffers all the side effects without any of the
hard-ons. In the feature film that follows, In Therapy, a bored woman
named Mercedes enters therapy only to have it screw up every detail of
her life. We guess they hope you enjoy them so much, you’ll show up to
one of the other 28 films. Check back for our Brazilian Film Festival
guide later this week.
